Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – New Trailer
The new Rogue One trailer landed and, for the first time, this spin-off feels like a war film that happens to be set in Star Wars rather than a scrapbook of familiar ships.
We knew the shape already. A band of rebels steals the Death Star plans. Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, is the one being pulled into it, and Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor looks like the person who has already done the ugly maths. What the new footage adds is weather, mud and panic. Beach landings. Walkers in the rain. A city that looks like it is about to be deleted.
The trailer’s best trick is tone. There are jokes, but they do not wink the way the main saga sometimes does. Everybody in this story already knows the Empire is not a cartoon. When the Death Star turns up, it is not a cameo. It is a threat with a timetable.
Ben Mendelsohn’s white-caped director and Forest Whitaker’s weary extremist give the thing adults to argue with. Donnie Yen with a staff is the shot that will be paused in every group chat. Alan Tudyk’s reprogrammed droid, K-2SO, is there to stop it all becoming a funeral march, and thank goodness.
We still do not know how tightly this sits against A New Hope, or whether the ending can stick when the audience already knows the plans have to get out. That is the fun of a prequel with a fixed destination. You are not watching to see if the file arrives. You are watching to see what it costs.
December feels a long way off. The trailer makes it feel closer, and a bit heavier, which is exactly what we wanted from a Star Wars story that is not about a Skywalker.
